1258 + 37 Years

Here's the old 1963-1966 Seufland West in Kailua, 1258 Ulupalakua Street in the Pohakupu neighborhood of Kailua in Honolulu County on Oahu (phew!) .

This is how the place appeared as we drove by one Sunday afternoon in April of 2003, right after it sold for well over $400,000 to another guy named Craig.

The house, built in the late 1950s, sits on a 75 foot by 100 foot deeded fee simple LOT which by itself is worth many more times than the house is worth. On the other hand, most houses in Hawaii are instead built on "leasehold" land which the property owners owning the houses sitting above never have control of.

Sad to say, since we left in 1966 the subsequent owners of 1258 have relentlessly added on to the house and in fact have, according to Kailua Assessor records, totally paved over the entire back yard to add living space on to the rear of the dwelling.

And they totally trashed the front yard as well. It used to have a nice plumeria tree, but that has been replaced by an ugly Norfolk Pine (which is so tall that it can actually be easily seen from the summit of Mt. Olomana).

That flat roof would not last long up here, I garontee...
