Here's the first "heirloom" tomato of the 2008 season. Of course, this isn't from my garden (those are still 4 months in the future) but instead comes from a supermarket. And they're tasty!
This is an "UGLYRIPE" heirloom tomato, which have been showing up here in New England for a couple of years now. This variety was derived from a tomato grown in France and is grown in several locations in the US. For several years, the Feds would not let the creator of this tomato ship them across state lines due to their irregular size and shape, but the USDA finally changed the rules.
