Save the Monkeypods!

Here are a couple of shots I snapped in May of 2003 on Kaua'i. On top you can see in the foreground some old monkeypod trees in Old Koloa Town and below that is one of the last undeveloped parcels of land in said town. This article ties the two together...

KOLOA, Hawaii (AP) Two mature monkeypod trees on Kauai are getting a new home. Kukuiula Development Incorporated has agreed to adopt the trees so it can build The Shops at Koloa Town. The plan is to have a nursery company relocate the trees at a 20-acre community park along Poipu Road in Koloa.

Mayor Bryan Baptiste says county officials are grateful the developer has agreed to save the treasured trees. The new park is to include picnic areas and baseball and soccer fields. Its creation was a condition for Kukuiula being allowed to develop areas on Kauai's south shore.
