Ice Out

Some of our smaller lakes like Wicwas still have many icy patches...

"GILFORD – It's the unofficial -- but very visible -- end of a seemingly endless winter. Ice-out on Lake Winnipesaukee occurred at 8 p.m. yesterday.

The official word came from official observer Dave Emerson of Emerson Aviation of Gilford.

Earlier on Wednesday, Emerson had expected the lake to open up today, not yesterday.

"There's still ice in the northeast part of the lake. Center Harbor Bay and Wolfeboro Bay are still blocked and there's some black ice left in the Broads which is breaking up pretty fast," Emerson had said.
He said yesterday's 80-degree temperature pushed the long-awaited meltdown along and that Alton Bay, Weirs Bay and Meredith Bay have been ice-free for a few days."
