Back when my family lived on Governors Island in New York Harbor in the late 1960s, we would make weekend pilgrimages to lower Manhattan to "Radio Row", which was a densely packed area of surplus electronics and ham radio stores. Sadly Radio Row was razed to make room for the WTC Towers, which of course are now no longer there either.
We would also take the subway up to Times Square, as "Music Row" included some other electronics (and camera) stores. Music Row has since 1935 been anchored by Manny's Musical Instruments-which is about to call it quits.
