There's usually a poi shortage this time of year in Hawaii, as it is in great demand for graduation season, weddings, etc. Taro is only grown in a few spots, and there are only a handful of "poi factories" left, two of them on Kaua'i. When we were out there in April and May of 2003, the Times Supermarket in my old hometown of Kailua on Oahu sold out of its weekly shipment in hours; it was slightly easier to find on the Garden Isle as we were 5 miles from the Waimea factory.
