WKRP is back on the air in Cincinnati — but this time it's teevee, not wireless.

A low-power TV station has changed its call letters to WKRP, the same as the fictional radio station in the 1970s hit series "WKRP in Cincinnati."

Herb: “I sold him mine.”
Les: “You never know when there’s going to be a flood.”

Cooking on the Island

Season 5 of "Top Chef" started Wednesday night on the Bravo channel, and this season is set in New York City. Lo and behold, the show kicked off with all of the contestants hopping on the Governors Island Ferry, and then being herded into our old back yard behind Buildings 111 and 112 to compete to see who got to go home first.

This first episode, called "Melting Pot", will be repeated a few times this week, notably Friday Nov. 14 at 12 noon Eastern.

Mitch Mitchell, the drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead this morning in his Portland OR hotel room.Mitchell, 61, apparently died of natural causes, the Multnomah County Medical Examiner said.

Air Kaua'i Grounded

Sad news from the Garden Isle-tour helicopter operator Air Kaua'i stopped flying last week, after the bank reposessed their two helos. The company has since filed for Chapter 11, which may allow them to keep flying. The hearing is today.

The two helos were new ones purchased last year.

R.I.P. "Mama Africa"

South African songbird Miriam Makeba finished a concert in Italy Sunday, then collapsed as she was leaving the stage. She was 76.

Some friends and my brother and I were privileged to see Miriam in concert in the early 1990s in Portland Maine. She was backed that night, which was her birthday, by her ex Hugh Masekela and his great band, but she was even happier to have one of her nieces singing backup.

She will be missed.

Octopus Garden RIP

Swiss-based marine explorer and inventor Jacques Piccard, who was part of the deepest submarine dive in history, has died at his home aged 86.

In 1960, Piccard and US co-pilot Don Walsh took a submersible developed by his father to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific. They went seven miles beneath the surface of the sea.
